Protecting Your Home While you are Away Over the Holidays

During the holiday season, there are two main groups of homeowners – those who plan their festivities at home and those who go away either to family or friends or on that long awaited vacation. For those who spend the holidays away from home, take some time to plan before you leave, including checking if there are any amendments you might need to make to your Pennsylvania home insurance policy.

When you are going to be gone for some time, it might be wise to bring in a house sitter. Ask around friends and family to find someone who is happy to come and stay at your place while you are away. Another alternative might be to consider finding someone appropriate through a house sitting agency. There are a growing number of businesses offering residential house sitting and pet minding services for people who are going away.

Should you be unable to find a house sitter, ask a neighbor to keep an eye on your place and collect your mail. Make sure you cancel any newspaper deliveries for the duration of your trip and try to advertise your absence as little as possible.

Before you go away, you’ll also need to check your Pennsylvania home insurance policy. You may find that there is an exclusion clause if you are absent from home over a particular period of time so it’s wise to ensure you have the right coverage in place before you depart.
