As the owner of a new business enterprise in Pennsylvania you are likely to need to call on the services of experts who have specialized training or skills. You may need to consult an accountant for tax advice, a local insurance agency to manage Pennsylvania business insurance matters, or a lawyer to consider business leases or defend lawsuits.

How do you find a good lawyer for your small business?

Do some online research. Use online resource to help you to locate lawyers in appropriate fields of law.

Focus on local law practices. Unless there’s a good reason to look further afield, look for lawyers who practice in your local area who will be familiar with the needs of local businesses and knowledgeable about city and state laws.

Use your network. Ask peers for recommendations; find out about costs and ask whether they were satisfied with the legal services provided.

Check out your short list. Once you have a short list of possible contenders, do some online searches to find out more about their reputations and experience, what sorts of cases they have handled recently, and how successfully they have represented their clients.

Having done some preliminary research, you may wish to engage a generalist lawyer on a retainer basis for most of your work and use the service of specialists for cases that are outside your generalist’s area of expertise. Don’t forget that the liability portion of your Pennsylvania business insurance policy may cover the cost of defending liability lawsuits.
